Looking for an ethical way to shop?

Charity, business, the NE and ethics are four of our favourite things. So when Traidcraft, the UK's leading Fairtrade organisation, got in touch to invite us to their Gateshead HQ for their first-ever bloggers' event, we said YES!

Since its launch in 1979 (in what became my favourite student haunt — Newcastle's WHQ), Traidcraft has fought poverty through trade: practising, promoting, and pioneering approaches that help people in developing countries transform their lives.

Working with over 100 producer groups in more than 30 countries, the Gateshead-based organisation supplies the UK’s widest range of Fairtrade products.

The Power of Ethical Trade

The stories we heard about the life-changing impact of Traidcraft’s international work were moving, humbling, and inspiring.

Since visiting their offices, I’ve been struck by our responsibilities as consumers — and the impact we can have when we buy reflectively. Supporting ethical businesses allows us to vote with our feet and support those who need it most, while making us appreciate and enjoy our purchases in a new way.

Climbing the Mountain: Coffee and Honey from Guatemala

One story that stood out was how Traidcraft works with coffee farmers.

“We don't just go to the mountain,” said Grocery Product Manager Rachael Colquhoun. “We go to the mountain and get right up to the top of it!”

This isn’t just a woman who loves coffee; this is someone full of delight at Traidcraft’s impact — sourcing and buying coffee beans from some of the most poverty-stricken groups in the world.

Originally, Traidcraft began working with the people of the Cuchumatan Mountains in Guatemala when searching for new honey suppliers for their popular Geobars. With 49% of the population living below the poverty line, this mountain community was particularly vulnerable.

After identifying a great product, Traidcraft helped them attain certifications for their honey. It was so delicious that they began bottling and selling it directly to consumers, boosting their income even further.

A few years later, during a visit, the team noticed the honey bees pollinating Arabica coffee bushes. Realising that high-grown Arabica produces superior coffee, Traidcraft worked with the community again — this time to become certified Fairtrade coffee growers.

Together, they developed a freeze-dried coffee range, and as demand grew, Traidcraft began offering it as a roast and ground product. The first batches are on their way from Guatemala as I type — available to buy from October!

Transforming Lives Through Trade

The profits from honey and coffee have helped lift this community from poverty — funding education, healthcare, emergency finance, and low-interest loans. A collection station halfway down the mountain has increased efficiency and created more job opportunities.

I can’t wait to buy a packet and reflect on the life-changing journey the Cuchumatan community has been on since Traidcraft first climbed their mountain.

Global Support and Hope

Traidcraft also supports many other communities, including those in Nepal recovering from the 2015 earthquake. In one video, a factory owner expresses heartfelt gratitude for Traidcraft’s continued support, describing how it gave his workers hope and stability.

When you buy from Traidcraft, you’re not just purchasing products — you’re rebuilding communities, stilling fear, and giving hope.

Fairtrade That Tastes (and Feels) Good

Traidcraft products don’t just do good — they are good!

My friend Elizabeth swears that Traidcraft tea is the best she’s ever had. Every food, drink, and gift I’ve tried is high-quality and made by people proud of their craft.

Their autumn/winter range has just launched, featuring food, drink, homeware, cleaning products, toys, clothes, and accessories.

I particularly adore their handcrafted nativity scenes, Christmas cards, wrapping paper, and wooden toys.

And don’t miss their decadent Fairtrade chocolate range — delicious, ethically sourced, and fully biodegradable.

Visit or Shop Online

Traidcraft products are sold through 400+ retailers nationwide — and you can also browse their online store or find your local stockist.

If you’re in Gateshead, pop into their Team Valley outlet shop, where you’ll find fantastic products at great prices. I picked up a beautiful organic shirt and a striking necklace for just £7.50 each — amazing value for such craftsmanship.
