EHIC Cards and Travel Insurance after Brexit

Following the Brexit announcements on Christmas Eve 2020, the Government advised that there will be a replacement for the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) for British travellers to receive healthcare abroad. This replacement card is called the UK Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC).

What Does the EHIC / GHIC Cover?

Your EHIC / GHIC card covers emergency or necessary state medical care abroad, including unexpected issues arising from pregnancy.

Important: The EHIC / GHIC is not a replacement for travel insurance and will not cover repatriation. We recommend purchasing appropriate Travel Insurance in addition to the card before travelling.

For advice about Business or Group Travel Insurance, call us on 0191 917 0330 or email info@talbotjones.co.uk.

Is My Current EHIC Card Still Valid?

From 1st January 2021, both EHIC and GHIC are accepted in all EU countries except Norway, Iceland, Switzerland, and Liechtenstein.

  • Your existing EHIC will remain valid until its expiry date.

  • If your EHIC has expired or you’ve never had one, you can apply for a new GHIC card here.

  • If your card is lost or stolen abroad, you can still access medical treatment by applying for a Provisional Replacement Certificate (PRC). Call Overseas Healthcare Services at the NHS Business Services Authority on +44 (0)191 218 1999 (weekdays).
