Creating a Plastic-Free Workplace: Tips for Plastic Free July

Plastic Free July is a global movement encouraging millions of people to reduce single-use plastics for cleaner streets, oceans, and communities. Will you take part by refusing single-use plastics?

This month, we are spreading awareness of plastic pollution and inspiring workplaces to reduce plastic use. Here are some practical ways we champion plastic-free practices in our office:

  • SodaStream for office water instead of single-use bottles

  • Alternative packaging for stationery and catering

  • Second-hand furniture for the office

  • Reusable cutlery and cups for team members

  • Accessible kitchen facilities for lunch and refreshments

  • Bulk buying supplies to reduce packaging

The UK only recycles 14% of recyclable plastic, and half of what is recycled isn’t truly recyclable due to improper disposal. Educate yourself: check your local council’s recycling policy and learn what can and cannot be recycled.

Individual Actions

  • Use a reusable water bottle

  • Bring reusable bags for groceries

  • Keep a spare bag in your car or pocket

  • Plan ahead to reduce disposable items

Organisational Actions

  • Ban disposable plastic water bottles; encourage staff to bring their own

  • Provide reusable cutlery and mugs

  • Promote in-office coffee and tea instead of disposable cups

  • Talk to suppliers about plastic packaging to find sustainable alternatives

  • Encourage plastic-free lunches and make kitchen facilities accessible

  • Reward employees for environmentally friendly changes

  • Create clear recycling rules

  • Support your community by volunteering to reduce plastic pollution

  • Use second-hand office furniture and donate old furniture

  • Centralise supplies to reduce incoming plastic
