Pursuing Fearlessness

“Pursuing Fearlessness” is the title of Clare's recent TEDx talk and it’s a subject with which our Business Development Director is deeply familiar.

Discussing her conference experience, she noted that the event was first scheduled for March 2020. When organisers rang for the go-ahead, she advised against it – a wise decision as the COVID lockdown was announced the next day. Read more: The making of insurance’s rising star.

Although it was disappointing, Clare felt relief knowing she had mentally prepared to face her fears. When the organisers moved the event online, she could withdraw gracefully but chose not to. She’s delighted with the resonance her talk has had with viewers.

Insurance and Risk Management are Exciting

Clare explained:

“It’s been a really exciting opportunity because insurance and risk management are often seen as grey and boring. Risk management is seen as the thing that stifles opportunity. I’ve been able to show that insurance and risk management are really exciting. It’s a great career, it’s a great industry, and it supports resilience, or antifragility.”

Her pursuit of fearlessness extends beyond the brokerage – including professional qualifications and personal challenges. For example, she built up the stamina to run a half-marathon after years of thinking she couldn’t.

“When you think ‘I could never do that,’ ask yourself ‘would I like to?’ If yes, then you find a way to do it. You work hard, and you achieve it.”

Choosing the TEDx Topic

Clare chose her TEDx topic early in the brokerage’s launch. She recalled advice from a marketing expert who suggested selling insurance through fear – something she knew she didn’t want.

“We don’t want to sell insurance through fear. We want to support organisations to better understand and manage risks so that they can do impactful and exciting things.”

Her business approach emphasizes planning, risk assessment, and confidence-building – making insurance a tool for progress rather than anxiety.

The TEDx Experience

Clare described the process of delivering the talk virtually as intricate and daunting. Standing alone in front of a camera was unnerving, but she succeeded in sharing her insights.

“I did it. I stood up in front of the cameras. It was hugely daunting, really difficult, but I’m hugely proud of myself that I did it and pleased it’s being appreciated and valued.”

She is excited to participate in future conferences, including live events, to continue sharing her experience and insights with an engaged audience.
