The War for Talent in Insurance

The insurance industry is in a race to recruit and retain young workers, as millions of Baby Boomers retire each year. Fortunately, the sector offers career benefits that align with the top priorities of UK employees today, such as:

  • Job security

  • Vacation and time-off policies

  • Pension and retirement options

  • Flexible working arrangements

  • Competitive pay and rewards

There’s also no shortage of young professionals stepping up to bridge the talent gap.

Rising Stars in Insurance 2022

Insurance Business UK’s Rising Stars are standout professionals under 35 who are already making a major impact. Nominees were reviewed on their achievements, contributions, and supervisor recommendations before being selected by an independent panel of industry leaders.

These winners represent today’s great talent and tomorrow’s thought leaders, CEOs, and board chairs.

Industry Resilience

Joanne Healy, underwriter for professional indemnity and telecommunications, media, and technology at Markel, described recent market conditions as “resilient.”

She highlighted how the industry has adapted quickly — from navigating a long soft market, to weathering the COVID-19 pandemic, to facing challenges from global conflicts such as the war between Russia and Ukraine.

“The insurance industry is often seen as slow to change,” says Healy, “but I’m proud of the way it has embraced innovation. I believe technology will continue to drive transformation, and those who adapt will reap the biggest rewards.”

The Value of Experience

Jordan Marks, broking director and co-owner of Sioma, is another 2022 Rising Star. He emphasised the impact of the pandemic on everything from products to claims handling, but also noted that it brought the industry closer together.

“I always felt one step away from truly helping clients as an underwriter, which is why I wanted to become a broker and business owner,” says Marks.

He also stressed the importance of in-office learning for young professionals: “I picked up valuable advice and skills just from being around senior staff. I think young people starting their careers from home are missing out.”
