My Experience on the Kickstart Scheme with Talbot Jones
I won’t lie — I wasn’t overly excited about the idea of a Kickstart Scheme before I applied through Gateshead Job Centre. My expectations were very low, shaped by the experiences of friends who had also taken part. Too often, they found that the promises made by employers were not delivered. One was promised video editing experience but instead spent time placing bets on sports. Another expected to gain skills as a web developer but ended up handing out leaflets. Others were asked to work unpaid, denied training, or even short-changed on pay.
Hearing stories like these, I was suspicious. I knew that the Department for Work and Pensions had received complaints about some businesses taking advantage of the scheme and the young people involved. But I was encouraged by my job coach to apply before the March deadline, as it might help me gain experience in a new sector — which was exactly what I wanted. I thought: what have I got to lose?
When I saw the Marketing position at Talbot Jones, it sounded almost too good to be true. The role promised mentoring from someone with a PGCE, experience in social media content creation and website management, plus opportunities for training in both insurance and marketing. Based on what I had heard about other Kickstart Schemes, I suspected it might be another false promise. Still, I applied.
First Impressions
Walking into Greensfield Business Centre in Gateshead for my interview, I was impressed by the professional setting. When I entered Talbot Jones’ office, it felt warm and personal, decorated with pictures, figurines and personal touches that made it feel welcoming. The interview itself was relaxed, though I walked away convinced I hadn’t done well enough. When Clare called to offer me the role, I was absolutely thrilled.
The First Month
From the very beginning, I learned so much. Clare taught me how to market effectively on social media, how to build a meaningful online portfolio, and how to form valuable professional connections. I completed training, attended co-working sessions with MINT Business Club, and joined webinars hosted by Small Business Britain. I registered with the IDM (Institute of Data & Marketing) and the CII (Chartered Insurance Institute), beginning my studies for a Level 2 Award in Insurance.
My friends were amazed at the difference between my experience and theirs, and I quickly realised just how lucky I was to be part of a business that genuinely invested in its Kickstart employees.
The Next Three Months
By the halfway point, I had already achieved two Level 2 qualifications through the EMS Going for Growth course. I attended my first networking event at the North East Expo to represent Talbot Jones, which was both daunting and exciting. I also started receiving employability support, writing blogs inspired by Sophie Milliken’s From Learner to Earner.
One highlight was attending the BIBA (British Insurance Brokers Association) Conference in Manchester, where I saw first-hand how Talbot Jones fits into the wider insurance marketplace and had the chance to meet industry professionals. I also enjoyed a team lunch where I met Miranda, our Claims Manager, who works remotely from the Lake District.
The Final Stage
In the last three months of the scheme, I attended an inspiring and emotional event hosted by Inspired HR. I proudly achieved my Level 2 Award in Insurance from the CII. By this stage, I was managing the Talbot Jones website and social media content independently, putting my skills into practice with freedom and flexibility. This experience not only boosted my knowledge but also gave me the confidence to see myself building a career in marketing.
Looking Ahead
I am now studying for a Level 6 Award in Digital Marketing Strategy, supported by Talbot Jones, and I am delighted to be continuing to work with the business one day a week. I am deeply grateful for the opportunities and encouragement I have received throughout my Kickstart journey, and I look forward to what the future holds.
