Insurance and Business Ethics Event – 2nd Feb
Last week, we highlighted an exciting event exploring ethics and insurance, held in collaboration with NIBE, the Insurance Institute of Newcastle upon Tyne, and Newcastle Business School. The session provided a comprehensive look at business ethics, professional codes of conduct, and the growing potential of ethical investments. You can read our preview of the event here.
Exploring Business Ethics
The event began with an overview of business ethics and their importance across organisations. Delegates examined:
Professional body codes of ethics, which guide industry conduct
The role of ethics in investment decisions
A Non-Executive Director’s perspective, highlighting why ethical practices matter at board level
One key takeaway was the diversity of opinions around what “business ethics” truly means—ranging from personal integrity and keeping one’s word, to environmental responsibility and supply chain ethics.
Ethical Investments Can Pay Dividends
A particularly encouraging discussion focused on ethical investment strategies. The ethical investment market in the EU has grown to €5 trillion and continues to expand. Firms like EdenTree Investment Management use robust criteria to assess potential and existing investments, ensuring they align with ethical standards.
Ethical investing isn’t just a moral choice—it can deliver tangible financial returns, proving that doing good and doing well can go hand in hand.
Maintaining Integrity in Business
Integrity emerged as a recurring theme throughout the evening:
Keeping one’s word, exemplified by NIBE’s previous Pay Fair campaign
Maintaining ethical supply chains and investment practices
These discussions reinforced the message that ethical behaviour in business extends beyond compliance—it’s about building trust, reputation, and long-term sustainability.
Looking Forward
We thoroughly enjoyed this event and the insightful discussions it sparked. We’re looking forward to attending future sessions and continuing to explore how ethics and insurance intersect in the business world.
