Understanding Car Insurance: When Fully Comp Doesn't Cover

We spotted this scary and galling news story recently. Thank goodness no one was in the car at the time of the fire.

Wear and Tear Is Not Covered

Wear and Tear is always excluded from insurance cover. Any charges related to Wear & Tear, unfortunately, will not be covered.

What you can do:
Keep on top of repairs to important possessions like your home and your car. While not all Wear & Tear can be prevented, a lot of it can.
Use a broker to advocate on your behalf. Brokers have the specialist knowledge needed to ensure you receive everything you’re entitled to. Even when a decision isn’t in your favour, they may be able to negotiate a goodwill gesture.

What a “Write Off” Really Means

A “write off” occurs when the cost of repairs exceeds the value of the vehicle. If repairs cost £250 but your car is valued at only £200, the vehicle would be classed as a write off.

What you can do:
Get multiple quotes, as repair prices can vary significantly between garages. If one garage says your car is a write off, it’s worth getting a second or third opinion.
Before agreeing to any work, always check that your insurance company approves your chosen garage — otherwise you may be liable for the full cost yourself.
