Lessons from My First Networking Event: A Marketing Assistant’s Perspective

Our Kickstart Marketing Assistant Jo attended her first networking event and wanted to share what she learned. This blog encourages apprentices or trainees to step out of their comfort zone and embrace professional networking.

Networking is a huge part of marketing, and when I was a teenager, I was intimidated by it. I preferred hiding behind a computer and writing content rather than facing potential rejection. Now, I’ve learned that networking isn’t about selling—it’s about talking to real people, sharing knowledge, and connecting authentically.

5 things I learned at my first networking event:

  1. There are no rules
I searched online for advice on what to ask or how to dress, but most suggestions were vague. The best approach? Say “hello,” introduce yourself authentically, and start from what you notice around you—a giveaway, a stand, or a fun activity.

  2. Quality over quantity
You don’t need to speak to everyone. Focus on having meaningful conversations, exchanging names, and following up afterwards via LinkedIn. That’s how real connections are built.

  3. Most people are friendly and helpful
I worried about being an “imposter,” but most attendees were welcoming and happy to share advice. They genuinely want to connect and help others learn.

  4. You don’t have to be an extrovert, but it helps
While I enjoy social interaction, networking confirmed that enthusiasm and energy make the experience more enjoyable. Introverts can still succeed—just take it at your own pace.

  5. Take notes
Keep a record of the people you spoke to and their companies. It helps with follow-ups, remembering names, and ensuring you get the most out of the event.

Networking is about learning, sharing, and building relationships. Whether it’s growing your client base, expanding your professional network, or exploring career opportunities, preparation, authenticity, and follow-up are key.
